The Bedon-Lucas House, listed as one of the eleven most endangered historic properties in the state in 1995, was constructed ca. 1829 by N. Y. Perry. It was sold to Richard Bedon and in 1845, he donated the front of his property to the city for a public park for which it is still used today. It was to this site that the Little Library building was moved from the lot on which St. Jude's Episcopal Church now stands.

The house was later purchased by Clarence Lucas, and it was from the Lucas estate that the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society bought the house in September 1996.

The Bedon-Lucas House is one of the key historic properties of the Walterboro Historic District. This Federal raised cottage features a five bay facade with a centered doorway. The piazza is distinguished by six large tapered columns which were later additions. A gold fish pond, fashionable in Walterboro during the early part of this century, was placed in the front garden.

Today the house is beautifully furnished with fine antiques and other period pieces. The house may be rented for special occasions, such as weddings, receptions, business meetings and other functions. The Society continues its efforts, carefully preserving the unique character, history, and life of this historical landmark.
